Jamia Millia Islamia is a prestigious public central university in New Delhi, founded in 1920 during India’s freedom movement. Its name means “National Islamic University” — Jamia meaning university and Millia meaning national.
Originally established in Aligarh by visionary leaders including Maulana Mahmud Hasan, Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, and Abdul Majeed Khwaja, the institution moved to Delhi in 1925. It was granted Central University status by an Act of Parliament in 1988.
Today, Jamia is known for its legacy of nationalism, inclusivity, academic excellence, research and cultural diversity. From school education to undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and professional programmes, it continues to uphold its founding vision: education as a tool for social progress and nation-building.
